WELCOME TO ST. WINNOW CE SCHOOL

The town of Lostwithiel is situated on the Fowey River, approximately five miles from the town of Fowey.
The town is served by a thriving community which hosts a popular community centre, several shops, several public houses and is on a regular bus route and main line train service.
The school is situated on the edge of the town and is very much part of the wider community. We regularly participate in local events. We have forged strong links with our local Community Colleges and outdoor centres; using both their excellent facilities and expertise in a range of curricular activities.
The school itself dates back to 1818 and was originally founded for the poor of the Parish to be educated within the principles and practices of the Church of England. The school's Junior and Infant classes were added in the 1890’s. The annex was completed in 1990 and was used as a gym when the school hall was being used as a classroom.
Renovation work was completed in 1994, which transformed the school completely, providing two classrooms, a larger infant classroom, indoor toilets, a staff room, a servery and a hall which no longer doubled as a classroom. In the summer of 1999 toilets were added to the annex and in September 2000 it was opened as our fourth class for Early Years children. This became the setting for Minnows Pre-School in 2008.
More recently the school has been extended to include new head and secretary’s offices and a fully equipped staffroom (where everyone has room to sit down!) . Building works in 2009 added a library and outside play area for one of the classes.

We also have a fantastic outdoor area which includes a wooded copse, pond, allotment (soon with polytunnel), a huge field and several 'secret gardens'. We will also be creating a sensory garden in 2011, with the help of funding from the Lottery.

At present we have 41 children on roll in two classes and a Pre-school which caters for up to 16 pupils per session.
As in most small schools, the Headteacher has a teaching commitment and is supported by a senior management team which consists of a lead teacher and secretary. There are also two other class teachers. All teachers have a subject on which they lead however the aim of the school is to have all staff developing all areas as a team. We have many teaching assistants who also support the teaching and learning throughout the school.
At present the school has twelve governors. Individual governors have curriculum links and are involved in various aspects of school life. The governing body has a number of roles including: Admissions, Buildings, Health and Safety, Finance and Personnel. They are also are involved in staff appointments.
We are very proud of our school and hope that when visiting us, talking to the staff or children and reading our prospectus, you will wish your child to be a part of it.
